How it works

If you have played a word-guessing game before, you already know this part. It takes about thirty seconds to learn.

    Guess a five-letter word

    Any real word will do to start. It has to be in the dictionary, but a rejected guess costs you nothing.

  2. 2

    Read the colours

    Every tile tells you whether that letter is in the word, and whether it is in the right place.

  3. 3

    Narrow it down

    Keep confirmed letters where they are, move the misplaced ones, and drop the eliminated ones. Six attempts in total.

Repeated letters have a rule of their own, and it is worth knowing. See how duplicates are scored.

Five ways to play

The scoring is the same everywhere. What changes is who picks the word and what it takes to win.

    One word a day, identical for every player. Six guesses, and a streak that carries as long as you keep winning.

    Head to head, and you each choose the word the other has to solve. Fewer guesses wins.

    A host sets one word and spectates while everyone else races. First to solve it takes the round.

You can choose the word

In Duel and Battle Royale a person picks the answer, not an algorithm. Setting a word that is hard but still fair turns out to be a skill of its own.

How to pick a good one

Rounds are genuinely live

You watch opponents fill rows as it happens. Drop your connection and you can rejoin the room rather than losing the round.

Scoring you cannot fake

Words are validated and scored on the server, so daily results and leaderboard positions mean something.
